Bob Atkinson: The big holiday getaway is on! Let me share with you my tips for a smoother departure and how to save money on your big trip!
1. Is your passport in date?
Save yourself the hassle of a visit to a passport service customer care centre by making sure you apply for a passport at least 4 weeks before your hols.
2. Travelling to Europe?
Get an EHIC card free! Get one by applying through the NHS website. This will give you some free medical care whilst you are holiday in Europe.
3. Get travel insurance
You cannot rely on an EHIC in any country, so you must have a travel insurance policy. You can save as much as 80% by comparing quotes on our website. And if you holiday more than once a year, an annual multi-trip policy will be a better buy!
4. Be card smart
Did you know that some cards charge as much as £5 every time you make a purchase abroad? And if you withdraw cash you will pay interest when using a credit card straight away. Don’t get stung with card charges, get a credit or debit card designed for overseas usage with market beating exchange rates AND no charges for usage.
5. Avoid exchanging your pounds at the airport
You are quite literally throwing away around £10 for every £100. Get online a week or more before you go and seek out the very best rates for your holiday money – they are not at places like the Post Office or your high street bank or travel agent.
6. Pre-book your parking
Guarantee your parking spot and save up to 60% on airport parking just by pre-booking. You can also get a parking package that gets you a relaxing night at a nearby hotel. Why not add an airport lounge and fast track through security to make your getaway even smoother? All of this is on our website.
7. Don't leave it late to hire a car
Search online as early as possible to get rates far cheaper than those on arrival, plus you will guarantee a car ready for you when you touch down.
8. Beware expensive excess insurance
Did you know that the biggest source of car hire complaints is the hard sell on the excess policy at the airport? Take out a car hire excess policy here in the UK. It ensures you are not left open to paying huge amounts out if you have an accident, gives you better cover and saves you the hassle of hard sell at the pick-up desk.
9. Don’t rack up your roaming data
Switch off roaming and use free wi-fi in the resort whenever possible or opt in to discounted rates with your provider before you leave the UK.
10. Don't go over your luggage allowance
Check your airline’s baggage allowance and weigh your bag to make sure you don’t have any nasty charges at the airport for going over your allowance. If you’re over, trim back or buy extra allowance online at a fraction of airport rates.
So, get yourself organised and you too can have a hassle-free, great break without breaking the bank. Have a great holiday!
