Cardiff tops Welsh postcode burglary tables

Homes in the CF23 postal district of North East Cardiff make more claims for burglary than those in any other part of Wales.

We looked at 2.68 million home insurance quotes run on MoneySuperMarket between December 2013 and November last year to find out which postcodes made the most claims for burglary.

And in Wales, Cardiff, Wrexham and Pontypool dominated the top 10 list, while Bangor, Talybont and Rhiwlas were among the places least likely to have been targeted by burglars.

Burglary claim capital

Wales generally has lower burglary claims rates than England, and does not feature at all in the UK’s top 20 postcodes for claims, but those living in Cymru’s riskier postcodes pay roughly £4 more per year for home insurance cover than those in safer postcodes.

The CF23 postal district, which includes Cardiff North East: Llanishen, Cyncoed, Pentwyn, Penylan, Pontprennau and Old St Mellons, recorded a rate of 39.5 claims per 1,000 home insurance quotes.

That’s higher than the EH14 Edinburgh postcode which topped the Scottish tables, but far lower than the TM8 East London postcode topping the UK tables with its 55.0 rate.

Second in the Welsh tables was the NP44 postcode of Cwmbran (26.5) and third was the CF11 postal district covering Canton, Grangetown and, again, Cardiff Central & South, and part of Cardiff City Centre.

At the other end of the scale, the university town of Bangor came out as the area safest from burglars. The LL57 region encompassing Bangor, Llanllechid, Rachub, Talybont, Bethesda, Glasinfryn, Llandygai, Mynydd Llandygai, Rhiwlas and Tregarth recorded 0.00 claims per 1,000 home insurance quotes.

‘Be conscious of the threat’

Kevin Pratt, home insurance expert at MoneySuperMarket, said: “North East Cardiff is the top of the burglary hotspot claims for Wales, with other high claim areas including the city centre and leisure hot spot Cardiff bay (CF11).

“Clearly, thieves target urban areas where there’s lots of activity to mask what they’re up too – but they also favour quiet areas where they can operate with less chance of being caught in the act.

“In short, they’ll go pretty much anywhere they think they can carry out their crime and get away with it, which means everyone needs to be conscious of the threat and make their home as safe and secure as possible.”
