Bring your broadband up to speed

Many of us are lured into broadband deals by the promise of super-fast internet access - however, a mere 21% of broadband users are receiving the download speeds they signed up for.

To make matters worse, 44% are only getting half the speed they expected.

These results come from the most extensive research into broadband speeds ever undertaken in the UK – with moneysupermarket.com conducting a survey of more than 43,000 broadband users.

Though many consumers feel misled by their broadband provider, generally the ability to produce better speeds is out of the company’s hands.

Speeds can be affected by many factors including line interference, the quality of wiring to your home, the number of people sharing the connection, etc.

So with these problems seemingly affecting the broadband industry at large, how can you ensure you get faster download times?

The first step is to know exactly what speed you’re receiving. This can be done at speedtest.net and speedtest.bbmax.co.uk. If you’re not happy with the results, contact your provider and ask them to upgrade your speed. Generally, providers are aware of the problem and should be sympathetic if you call and ask to upgrade.

Some will do it for free while others will increase your monthly charge slightly.

If you don’t get the answer you’re looking for, then come back to the broadband comparison tool and see what other, potentially cheaper options, are available to you.

It might be worth opting for a package that offers speeds twice as fast as you want to increase your chances of getting your desired download rate.

Generally speaking, this will mean paying more for your broadband deal, so there is another solution – and that’s to look for the cheapest supplier of 8Mb broadband and switch.

I’d recommend the following deals as they are all on the BT network – meaning they are available in 99.6% of the UK:

  • PlusNet Option One – An excellent deal at £9.99 per month for up to 8Mb broadband.
  • Eclipse Evolution Option One (Switcher) - £13.74 per month for a great value broadband product from a provider with an excellent customer reputation. Bear in mind you must already be a broadband customer with a different provider to qualify for this deal.
  • BT Option One (18 months) - £14.97 per month – according to the feedback we receive through our broadband channel this is one of the most reliable products around.
  • Madasafish MAX Broadband – An enticing deal at £14.99 per month, which also includes a free wireless kit.

One additional reason for using our broadband comparison tool is that in the past 12-18 months there have been dramatic improvements both in price and in the quality of services available to broadband users. If speed matters – and you are nearing the end of your existing contract, it makes sense to look for a better deal.
