Best festive supermarket deals

The nation’s supermarket giants are pulling out all the stops this Christmas in order to tempt us through their doors.

From turkeys to trimmings and from Champagne to cheese, here’s our round up of some the best offerings to help you keep those festive food bills to a minimum. Remember that deals change all the time, and certain offers are only around for days at a time, so you’ll need to act fast if you want to take advantage of some these discounts…

Drink and be merry

Plenty of us like a celebratory glass of fizz on Christmas morning, and the good news is there are some great Champagne deals currently available.

Asda, for example, has just launched a corking offer of £14.50 off bottles of Pierre Darcy’s Champagne. Usually costing £24.50 a bottle, Asda has slashed the cost to just £10 a bottle until January 3, 2014. You can’t buy more than six bottles at a time, but you can buy either online or in stores and you don’t need a voucher or code.

Lidl and Aldi also offer low cost Champers, although only in stores.  Lidl’s Comte de Brismand Campagne costs £11.99 a bottle, while Aldi’s Veuve Monsigny Champagne is £12.99 a bottle. The good news is that this isn’t a special offer, so you can buy it all year round at these prices.

If you’re planning on buying in bulk, then Tesco is offering 25% off all wine and Champagne when you buy six bottles or more until December 1. This includes all wines in store and online except fine wines. A spokesperson for Tesco said; “Any wine already on promotion will effectively be ‘double dipped’ so you’ll get it for the promotion price plus 25% off.”

Festive food

Why not kick off Christmas lunch with some smoked salmon? Sainsbury’s is offering 120g of Taste the Difference oak-smoked salmon for £3, down from its usual price of £5, until December 5. Tesco is also offering bargain salmon – you can pick up 300g for £6.50, down from its usual £13 price, right up until Christmas Eve.

There are plenty of other food bargains available too. Waitrose, for example, is offering a third off roasting joints from November 27 for one week only, so it might be a good idea to stock up your freezer now if you’re going to be catering for the masses over the next few weeks. Offers include Aberdeen Angus Topside for £10.65 per kg, down from £15.99 per kg, and Stuffed Pork Shoulder for £3.63 per kg, down from £5.45 per kg. And if you want to get ahead of the game by buying your turkey early, Asda’s basted turkey crown is down to £8 a kg from its usual price of £8.78 a kg until Christmas.

Puddings and party food

You either love it or hate, but you’ve got to have a Christmas pudding. The Co-Operative Food has slashed the price of its 454g Truly Irresistible Christmas pudding to £3, down from its usual price of £6, and this offer is available until December 3.

You can pick up some delicious accompaniments for your Christmas pud at Tesco, which is offering two for £4 deals on Finest range of creams and brandy butter from now until Christmas.

If you’re looking to round off your Christmas lunch with a nice cheeseboard, then Sainsbury’s is currently running a 25% off promotion on selected Taste the Different cheeses. Available until December 3, the promotion includes Cave Aged Cheddar, Shropshire Red, Stilton and Manchego cheeses.

Tesco, meanwhile, is offering a ‘cheese tower’ with over a kilo of cheese including a smooth Brie, crumbly Wensleydale with cranberries and a mature Cheddar for £10 from now until Christmas.

If you’re hosting a party this Christmas, then Tesco currently has a three-for-two offer on its core and Finest party food ranges until December 3. From December 4, it is then offering buy one get one free on all party food.

No Christmas party would be complete without mince pies, and Tesco is offering 20% off its Finest range of pies until January 1, 2014.

Christmas gifts

Food can make a great present, especially for those difficult to buy for friends and family, so check out the supermarket shelves next time you visit as they’re usually packed with gift offers. Asda, for example, has an Extra Special Port and Stilton Jar gift set for just £6, while there’s a DIY Crispie House to keep the little ones busy for £5.

If it’s chocolate that tickles your fancy, then you can get a box of Extra Special Marc de Champagne Truffles with their own stand for £6, again from Asda.

The Co-Operative Food is offering a 600g box of Milk Tray for half-price, at £5 rather than £10 until December 3, and you can also pick up two tins of Cadbury’s Heroes, Roses, Swizzels Sweet Shop Favourites, Mars Celebrations or Nestle Quality Street tubs for £10, again until December 3.

Waitrose, meanwhile, has an Arden & Amici Cranberry and Orange Panettone on sale for £9 for 750g, or Seriously Chocolately Milk Chocolate Truffles at £5.99 for 200g.

Getting where you are going

It's not just food and drink you can get great deals on either. If you spend £60 or more in any one transaction at Sainsbury's between Thursday November 28 and Wednesday December 4, you'll get a voucher to use at the supermarket's forecourts which will land you a discount of 10p a litre on petrol, diesel or LPG autogas. The offer is available online and in-store.
