Availability and price

The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 5G retails at £949 and was launched in August 2020. The 4G model costs from £849. You can buy it on a contract deal with a reduced upfront cost for the handset with MoneySuperMarket.

Design

The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 5G might be slightly smaller (measuring 161.6 x 75.2 x 8.3mm) and lower spec than the Ultra version, but it still comes with a bold OLED screen and Samsung’s signature S-Pen stylus.

The S-Pen is in a slot on the left side of the phone’s base. Remove it and the interface icon automatically appears on your screen.

The phone has a plastic back, not glass like the Ultra, but retains the light-diffusing style of finish that makes it look like textured glass until you pick it up. The screen also isn’t curved and ultra-high res like its more expensive cousin.

It’s IP68 water resistance meaning it’s deemed fit enough to withstand dust, dirt and sand, and be can be submerged up to a maximum depth of 1.5m.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 5G is available in Mystic Bronze, Grey or Green.If you want a black or white option, you’ll need to opt for the top of range Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G.

Camera

The Samsung Galaxy Note 5G has a triple-rear camera and one forward facing or ‘selfie’ cam. It’s a similar set-up to what you’ll get with the Galaxy S20 range.

The three cameras on the back are a 12MP f/1.8 primary camera, a 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide and a 64MP 8K/zoom camera with 1.1x optical zoom.

You can shoot video at up to 8K resolution, and it offers extra detail over 4K capture.

Specs

The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 is a lower-cost alternative to the top of the line Ultra version.

It has a 2400 x 1080 AMOLED panel resolution with 60Hz refresh rate (not the 120HZ offered by the Ultra) and 570nit brightness.

The UK version runs off Samsung’s Exynos 990 processor and stereo speakers are above the screen and on the bottom of the phone.

For security it has fast in-screen fingerprint scanning and face unlock feature.

Should I buy the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 or Note 20 Ultra?

The Note 20 Ultra is a step up from the Note 20, but you pay for that in the wallet. Among other advantages, the Ultra is a bigger phone, with a higher resolution, faster refresh rate and has more powerful cameras and a better zoom facility. However, the Note 20 could still be a strong contender for many. It’s more compact, but still retains the Samsung S-Pen stylus feature and although it isn’t as high spec as the Ultra, it should have ample power for even a heavy user.

Increasing numbers of Samsung handsets support 5G, but the important thing is to check before you buy. For example, the Samsung Note 20 provides both 4G and 5G options, with the Note 20 5G costing around £100 more.
