iPhone 13 Pro vs iPhone 13 Pro Max

Released in September 2021, the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max are the powerhouses of Apple’s latest line-up of smartphones. But how do they measure up against each other? Read our review to find out more.

Overall Winner in snapshot: iPhone 13 Pro

Taking their places as the higher-end models of the iPhone 13 range, the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max represent the very best of Apple’s offering. And with their dazzling displays, excellent cameras and advanced specs, we can certainly see why.

They’re identical to each other in terms of features and functionality. The main differences are size, battery life and, most importantly, price.

If you like to multitask, play games and watch videos on your phone, you might appreciate the generous screen real estate of the iPhone 13 Pro Max.

But, in general, we’d say the pocketable size of the iPhone 13 Pro is more likely to suit most people. And while not cheap, the price tag is slightly easier to swallow than that of the 13 Pro Max.

iPhone 13 Pro vs iPhone 13 Pro Max: What are the key differences?

  • Screen size – the iPhone 13 Pro measures 6.1 inches, while the 13 Pro Max comes in at a whopping 6.7 inches
  • Weight – the iPhone 13 Pro weighs 203g, while the 13 Pro Max weighs 238g
  • Battery life – the iPhone 13 Pro promises 22 hours of video playback, while the 13 Pro Max has 28 hours

iPhone 13 Pro vs iPhone 13 Pro Max design

When it comes to design, the iPhone 13 and 13 Pro have the same look and build quality.

Continuing from the iPhone 12’s design, both phones feature a flat metal edge and glossy glass back. It’s a nod back to the classic iPhone 4 design, and it’s seriously sleek. They also have an edge-to-edge screen, with a notch that’s 20% smaller than on the iPhone 12.

And instead of the lightweight aluminium rim found on the regular iPhone 13, both Pro models use a sturdier stainless steel.

The main difference is, of course, size. While the iPhone 13 Pro has the same dimensions and screen size as the regular iPhone 13, the 13 Pro Max is much larger. Measuring 6.7 inches diagonally compared to the 13 Pro’s 6.1 inches, it’s not as pocketable or easy to use in one hand as its smaller iteration.

Both phones come in a choice of four colourways: Graphite, Gold, Silver and Sierra Blue.

iPhone 13 Pro vs iPhone 13 Pro Max camera

For photography or videography enthusiasts, the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max are both safe bets.

A step-up from the regular iPhone 13’s 12MP dual lens snapper, both Pro models add an extra telephoto lens and LiDAR Scanner to their camera set-ups. As well as Apple’s new Cinematic Mode, Photographic Styles and an improved Night mode, they come with some exciting features exclusive to the Pro line.

As well as better low-light and portrait capabilities, they have Apple ProRAW, which lets you shoot RAW files that allow for much greater detail and editing potential. Similarly, they support Apple’s ProRes video recording, which gives you advanced video capabilities with high quality and low compression.

iPhone 13 Pro vs iPhone 13 Pro Max screen display

Both phones have a Super Retina XDR OLED screen with ProMotion technology exclusive to the Pro models. This brings adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz, giving you a smoother and more responsive experience when you’re scrolling on websites and viewing animations.

Display size and resolution differ from one another. The iPhone 13 Pro measures 6.1 inches diagonally (same as the regular iPhone 13) and has a resolution of 2532 x 1170 pixels. Meanwhile, the 13 Pro Max has a much more expansive display, at 6.7 inches, with a resolution of 2778 x 1284 pixels.

Ultimately, both phones have beautifully bright displays – it just depends on whether you prefer having more screen real estate.

iPhone 13 Pro vs iPhone 13 Pro Max battery life and performance

While the iPhone 13 Pro has a very respectable 3095mAh battery, the sheer size of the 13 Pro Max means it can pack a whopping 4352mAh battery in its large frame. This means it can comfortably last a day of heavy use, or even two days of normal-to-light usage.

Nevertheless, both batteries are a noteworthy upgrade from their iPhone 12 counterparts. According to Apple, the iPhone 13 Pro lasts 1.5 hours longer than the iPhone 12 Pro on a single charge, while the 13 Pro Max lasts 2 hours more than the 12 Pro Max.

Additionally, they’re both powered with an A15 Bionic chip, Apple’s latest and greatest processor.

iPhone 13 Pro vs iPhone 13 Pro Max software

Both phones come installed with iOS 15 out of the box. At the time of writing (February 2022), they both support Apple’s latest iteration, iOS Version 15.3.1.

And with Apple providing software updates long after release date, you can rest assured that both the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max will be supported for years to come.

iPhone 13 Pro vs iPhone 13 Pro Max verdict

Both phones are the best that Apple has to offer right now. With their stellar cameras, long-lasting battery life and powerful performance, you’re getting a fantastic flagship either way.

And, unlike the previous iPhone 12 Pro models, there are far more similarities than differences when comparing the iPhone 13 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Ultimately, it all comes down to size and price – and the iPhone 13 Pro Max is in the absolute top end when it comes to both factors. Some might love its large screen and long battery life, while others might find it too big and bulky for everyday use. Not to mention, it’s the most expensive option from Apple’s range.

Otherwise, the iPhone 13 Pro contains all the features of its larger sibling, with nothing watered down. Along with its more compact frame and slightly cheaper price tag, it’s the phone we’d recommend to most users.
