The OnePlus Nord 2 5G’s key features

The OnePlus Nord 2 5G is the upstart mobile maker’s 2021 attempt at cornering the super competitive mid-range market. Its key features include:

  • 6.43-inch, 1080 x 2400 pixel display
  • 65W ultra fast charging
  • Impressive triple lens camera with main 50MP lens
  • Strong battery life

How good is the OnePlus Nord 2 5G’s camera?

OnePlus has loaded the Nord 2 5G up with three cameras on the rear of the device: a 50MP main lens with optical image stabilisation, a 8MP ultrawide lens and a 2MP mono lens. Considering this is billed as a mid tier phone, the results are really impressive. Shots taken in good light appear crystal clear and full of detail, with great colour reproduction.

There are 22 different shooting modes which work automatically thanks to artificial intelligence (AI), meaning the OnePlus Nord 2 5G can tell when you’re taking pics of food, landscapes or pets.

Its performance at night and in the dark is second to none, with no nasty noise or blockiness ruining photos. In fact, it’s as good as some phones which cost significantly more.

Up front, the 32MP selfie camera is ideal for social media shots and offers clear video calling too. The main camera can shoot 4K video at 30 frames per second, a feature brought across from OnePlus’s pricier top end models.

How good is the OnePlus Nord 2 5G’s design?

The OnePlus Nord 2 5G won’t win any awards for its design. It’s a more than decent effort, with a glass back featuring Gorilla Glass 5 to protect it from any bumps and scrapes, with the camera lenses protruding slightly at the top.

One slight failing is the fact it doesn’t have an IP rating. That means it isn’t dust or waterproof, something virtually all mid and top end phones offer these days. So if you’re clumsy, it might be worth investing in a decent case.

How good is the OnePlus Nord 2 5G’s display?

Clocking in at 6.43 inches and with a 1080 x 2400 pixel resolution, the display on the OnePlus Nord 2 5G looks great. Refresh rate tops out at 90Hz, lower than some more expensive phones but more than enough to ensure smooth performance when gaming or watching video.

There’s a hole punch at the top left of the screen for the selfie camera, while the display stretches across the entire device, with thin bezels that don’t feel intrusive.

There are brighter screens out there, but at this price point the OnePlus Nord 2 5G is one of the best smartphone screens you can get right now.

How good is the OnePlus Nord 2 5G’s battery life?

The OnePlus Nord 2 5G has a large 4,500mAh battery which will last upwards of 24 hours on a single charge with normal everyday use. This is fairly standard now at this price, but welcome if you’re upgrading from a phone that needs to be plugged in twice a day.

What really makes it stand out, though, is support for 65W charging. That means you can get the OnePlus Nord 2 5G from zero to full power in just half an hour. Best of all, OnePlus includes a charger in the box with these fast charging capabilities, meaning you don’t need to shell out for one on top of the phone.

What are the key differences between the OnePlus Nord 2 5G and the OnePlus Nord?

What we like

  • Camera on OnePlus Nord 2 5G builds on older model and offers better shots
  • New MediaTek chip offers snappier performance
  • Newer versions of Android available on OnePlus Nord 2 5G

What we don’t like

  • Design changes are minimal

How does the OnePlus Nord 2 5G compare to other flagship handsets in the UK market?

The OnePlus 2 Nord 5G is at the cheaper end of the OnePlus spectrum. The Chinese brand’s OnePlus 9 Pro and OnePlus 10 Pro offer more features but at a greater cost.

The Google Pixel 6a offers a better camera but lacks when it comes to battery life. Meanwhile the Samsung Galaxy A53 leads the line when it comes to mid tier phones, with features usually found on fancier handsets.

MoneySuperMarket’s expert rating: Four out of five

At £399 SIM free, the OnePlus Nord 2 5G represents great value. It has an excellent screen, great battery life and offers solid performance too. Its design could be better, but that’s a small quibble when considering its price point.
