The new Huawei P20 Pro is a clear contender to be the ultimate smartphone for photography.
Its high-end specifications allow you to submerse yourself in augmented reality (AR) experiences and, with artificial intelligence (AI) embedded at its core, the P20 Pro challenges the notion of what a phone can do.
Huawei P20 Pro highlights:
- Leica triple lens camera
- 6.1” FullView display
- Android Oreo 8.1
- 4,000mAh high capacity battery
Leica triple lens camera
The Leica triple lens camera on the Huawei P20 Pro is like nothing we have ever seen before. It is so good, that DxOMark, a leading camera reviewer, has given the P20 Pro the best score for photos and videos on any smartphone, throwing down the gauntlet to the competition.
The three camera lenses include a 40MP colour lens, a 20MP monochrome (black and white) lens and an 8MP telephoto lens.
It is the software behind the camera that really makes things special. Driven by a new Kirin 970 processor, images are processed using AI.
The Master AI feature recognises the scene you are shooting, such as a beach or your dog, and adjusts all of the image settings automatically. If objects are moving, then 4D predictive focus pre-focuses on the moving object or person, so blurring becomes a thing of the past.
The camera is also designed for low-light photography. This is notoriously tricky on a smartphone but the Huawei P20 Pro forests out to correct this problem. Its ‘night’ mode uses AI image stabilisation, so that you no longer need a tripod to get good results.
Other camera features include:
- Super slow-motion video recording at 960 frames per second
- 3D panorama image creation of a person or object
- A 24MP selfie lens
- 3D portrait lighting with AI recognising your facial contours and adding different studio lighting and shadow effects.
Huawei P20 Pro display and design
The Huawei P20 Pro has a large 6.1” FullView Display. This follows the design trend where the display fills the front face and there is a notch in the top of the screen for the camera lens.
Huawei has refined this by making the notch much smaller than that on other flagship smartphones. If you don’t like the notch, then you can turn it off and the display creates a black notification band at the top, making the notch disappear.
OLED screen technology with full HD resolution gives a sharp and vibrant look to anything shown on the screen. This tech also has an Always Display feature, which lets you see the number of notifications you have pending and the time, even when the display isn’t active.
Further innovative features include:
- Smart navigation with the fingerprint sensor
- 128GB internal memory
- Huawei SuperCharge fast battery charging
