Looking for a new phone? Find the perfect mobile phone tariff and get your hands on the coveted Google Pixel 4XL
Price and availability
The Google Pixel 4XL was out for pre-orders on 15 October 2019, and it started shipping on 24 October. You can pick up the phone with 64GB of storage for £829, and £929 for the 128GB version.
Design and features
The Pixel 4 and 4XL are practically identical in terms of design, save for the bigger display and overall size on the XL. You’ll get a handset with a top and bottom bezel but no notch, while the power and volume buttons stay on the right-hand side.
The phones have a USB-C port at the bottom, but neither gets a headphone jack.
You’ll also have a glass rear set into a round frame, which means you might want to consider a case to keep the phone in better condition.
The handsets are available in black, white and orange.
Being a bigger phone overall, the Pixel 4XL offers a 6.3-inch OLED display, compared to the 4’s 5.7 inches, as well as a 3,040x1,440 resolution – but with ether phone you’ll get a smoother 90Hz refresh rate.
The Pixel 4XL, like its little sibling, has an upgraded camera set-up – the rear camera contains two lenses, the first a wide-angle 12MP and the second a telephoto 16MP. The front camera, also wide-angled, comes in at 8MP.
With the new Pixel 4XL you’ll be treated to some new interesting features, such as:
- Face unlock: You’ll be able to unlock your Pixel 4XL with a glance at the camera
- Motion sense: You can also control music playback, alarms and phone calls with hand gestures
- Active edge: A quick squeeze of the phone’s edges will bring up the Google Assistant
- Within Recorder: A live audio transcription tool that offers quick and accurate speech-to-text
Just as with the overall design, in terms of technical specifications the Pixel 4 and 4XL are largely similar. They both use a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor and 6GB RAM, and come with 64GB and 128GB storage options.
The 4 and 4XL also offer wireless Qi charging on top of the usual USB-C cable powerup, but with the 4XL you’ll be charging a much bigger battery with a capacity of 3,700mAh. If you’re a heavy user and battery life is your priority, it’ll be worth spending extra for the 4XL model.
