Looking for a new phone? Find the perfect mobile phone tariff and get your hands on the coveted Google Pixel 4.
Price and availability
The Google Pixel 4 was available for pre-order on 15 October 2019, and started shipping on 24 October. You’ll be able to get the handset at around £669 for the 64GB version, and £769 for 128GB of storage.
Design and features
Aside from the difference in size and display, the Pixel 4 and 4XL have identical designs. Neither handset has a notch, but they do have bezels at the top and bottom of the display.
The power and volume control buttons are on the right, and the USB-C port at the bottom – but there’s no headphone jack.
The rear is made from glass set into a rounded frame, with the camera in the top left corner. You can get the phone in white, black or orange.
Display
The Pixel 4’s OLED screen measures 5.7 inches compared with the 6.3 inch display on the 4XL, but both have a 90Hz refresh rate – higher than usual, making the display smoother. The Pixel 4’s screen resolution is 2,280x1,080.
Camera
Both the Pixel 4 and 4XL rear cameras have been upgraded, each now offering a dual lens set-up. The first is a 28mm wide-angle 12MP lens, and it’s combined with a 16MP 13mm telephoto lens, offering 2x optical zoom.
The Pixel 4 and 4XL’s front camera is also wide-angle, with a single 8MP lens.
Special features
The new Pixel phones have a few interesting features added, including:
- A motion sense camera, letting you control music, alarms and phone calls with a wave of your hand
- A face unlock feature, allowing you to unlock your phone just by looking at the camera
- An active edge that lets you summon the Google Assistant with a squeeze
- Within Recorder, a quick and accurate live audio transcription tool
Tech specs
Google’s Pixel 4 and 4XL boast the same processor, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855, and they both have 6GB of RAM and either 64GB or 128GB of storage.
Both models support Qi wireless as well as wired charging, however it’s the battery life where you’ll find the real difference between the handsets.
The Pixel 4 sports a 2,800mAh capacity, far smaller than the Pixel 4XL and not even matching up to its predecessor, the Pixel 3 – so if battery life is a priority, consider the 4XL.
