Looking for a new phone? Find the perfect tariff and get your hands on the Huawei P30
Price and availability
The Huawei P30 and its bigger sibling, the P30 Pro, were both available for purchase straight after launching on 26 March 2019. The P30 was priced at £699 at release, however you may be able to find it cheaper as it’s been available for some time.
Design and features
The P30 is a stylish upgrade to Huawei’s P20 – the front and rear are covered in Corning Gorilla Glass, and while the top and bottom edges are flat the sides are rounded. The camera does however stick out slightly on the rear, which might be a little off-putting. The bezels are thicker compared to the P30 Pro, and the front camera notch is also a little bigger.
Huawei have also reintroduced the headphone jack to the P30 after it was absent from the phone’s predecessor, as well as a USB-C charging port.
The P30 does come in an array of colours, including black, white, amber sunrise, breathing crystal and aurora.
The Huawei P30’s OLED display measures at 6.1 inches and offers a resolution of 2,340 x 1,080 – it also supports Full HD+. As mentioned above, both the screen and rear are covered in Corning Gorilla Glass.
The camera is arguably Huawei’s most impressive feature on the P30. On the back you’ll find three lenses:
- A 40MP wide-angle lens with an f/1.8 aperture
- A 16MP ultra wide-angle lens with an f/2.2 aperture
- An 8MP telephoto lens with an f/2.4 aperture
They combined to make a very capable rear camera – the 40MP lens incorporates Huawei’s Super Spectrum, allowing it to take more natural-looking photos with enhanced colouring.
The camera has a great night-mode feature, letting you take high-quality snaps in low light too.
Additionally, it has a notable zoom facility that lets you achieve a 30x zoom on photos and 10x on videos.
You’ll be able to shoot video in up to 4k Ultra HD quality, though you’ll lose some of the video effects when you shoot at higher resolutions.
The front camera has a 32MP lens that lets you take high-detail selfies with a range of effects, including a stage lighting feature that highlights your face for quality headshots.
Aside from the camera, if you opt for the Huawei P30 you’ll also get:
- An on-screen fingerprint sensor
- Huawei’s SuperCharge feature that lets you power up the phone during your coffee break
- A light sensor
- A proximity sensor
- An accelerometer
- A compass
- A gyroscope
The P30 runs on Huawei’s own Kirin 980 processor, as does the P30 Pro, but the P30 only comes in one storage option of 128GB. You’ll also get 6GB of RAM, and a 3,550mAh battery.
