iPhone 12 Pro Max key features

One rather key feature of the iPhone 12 Pro Max is its large size. At 160.8mm tall, with a 6.7-inch display, it’s perfect for those who truly value their screen space.

The Pro Max line of iPhones is also known for its superb cameras, in this case a triple-lens setup including telephoto and ultrawide lenses.

And those of us glued to our mobiles will be pleased to hear it also boasts a chunky battery that will last all day.

It has 5G connectivity too, for next-generation mobile internet; and wireless charging and MagSafe. That’s particularly useful for attaching accessories to enhance those pro-level cameras.

iPhone 12 Pro Max design

Well, it’s big. The iPhone 12 Pro Max is 160.8mm tall, while otherwise looking exactly the same as the rest of the iPhone 12 models.

It has an old school iPhone look, with curved square edges, and a shiny stainless steel and glass exterior for a truly luxurious look and feel.

Take your pick from silver, graphite, gold, or pacific blue.

How good is the iPhone 12 Pro Max camera?

The cameras on the Pro Max are the best of the already-excellent iPhone 12 set by a good mobile. There are three lenses:

  • 12MP wide lens
  • 12MP telephoto lens with 2.5x optical zoom
  • 12MP ultrawide lens with 120-degree field view

Together, they make for an impressive range of shots.

It’s fantastic for video too – the 12 Pro Max is capable of Dolby Vision recording at 4K resolution and 60fps.

As for the front-facing camera, you get a 12MP lens just like the rest of the iPhone 12 suite, for perfectly crisp selfies.

How good is the iPhone 12 Pro Max display?

Not only is the iPhone 12 Pro Max’s display massive, it’s also incredible quality.

It’s a cool 6.7 inches in size (the regular iPhone 12 has a 6.1-inch screen, for comparison), and at 1284 x 2778 pixels it’s stunningly high resolution.

Apple’s Super Retina XDR OLED technology means clear colours and true blacks, and it has the advantage of being nice and bright too. You won’t struggle to view it on a sunny day.

Because of its amazing size and resolution, the 12 Pro Max almost rivals a tablet in terms of what you can do with it. You can watch videos in brilliant resolution, play games without worrying about sausage fingers, and even edit photos and videos.

How good is the iPhone 12 Pro Max battery life?

It’s safe to leave the house without a charger, thanks to the 3687mAh battery packed into the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

That means some of the best battery life seen on an iPhone full stop, easily able to last all day long. It’s the best battery life of the whole iPhone 12 set – though the battery on the iPhone 13 Pro Max generally lasts even longer.

What are the key differences between the iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone 13 Pro Max?

The iPhone 13 Pro Max was released just a year after the 12 Pro Max, in 2021. The differences aren’t life-changing, but the 13 Pro Max is certainly a clear step better.

First off, the designs are very similar, and the sizes of the two phones are practically identical. The screens are the same size and resolution, the only difference here being that the 13 Pro Max is very slightly brighter.

Inside, the tech is a step up on the 13 model. It packs an Apple A15 Bionic chip to run iOS 15 out of the box – while the 12 Pro Max has an A14 chip. Its software can nonetheless be upgraded to the latest version. The battery, too, is heftier on the 13 Pro Max.

Avid photographers will be happy with either phone. The cameras are excellent on the iPhone 12 Pro Max, but on the 13 version they’re even better. The telephoto lens is capable of 3x optical zoom (compared to 2.5x on the 12), and the accompanying software comes with new features – such as Cinematic Mode.

But, of course, because the two smartphones are a generation apart, another key difference is the price. Although the iPhone 13 Pro Max is a touch better in technological terms, the 12 Pro Max will almost always come cheaper.

What we like

  • Large size with a high-resolution big screen, perfect for watching videos, editing photos, and playing games
  • Fantastic, professional-level cameras
  • Better battery life than most iPhones
  • Packed with top-tier specs
  • Attractive design

What we don’t like

  • Some will find it too large, especially if you have smaller hands, and it’ll struggle to get in a lot of pockets
  • Doesn’t come cheap
  • Specs are higher than most of us need – unless you regularly use your mobile for heavy tasks like video editing, you likely won’t ever need to use it to its full capacity

How does the iPhone 12 Pro Max compare to other handsets on the market?

For a start, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is quite a bit bigger than other phones on the market. If you want a larger-sized phone – and prefer iPhone over Android – then the Pro Max series is the one to go for.

The set of iPhone 12 phones was released in 2020, so the 12 Pro Max isn’t from the latest cohort. It’ll be slightly behind later iPhone models in terms of specifications – in particular the next-gen iPhone 13 Pro Max.

However, it still has one of the best cameras on a smartphone, full stop. Later models don’t offer huge improvements on it, and it’s miles ahead of older iPhones.

The tech inside, such as the processors, are also among the best you can get on the market, iPhone or Android alike. They aren’t likely to be obsolete for quite some time.

MoneySuperMarket’s expert rating

The iPhone 12 Pro Max is one of the best smartphones you can lay your hands on. It gets full marks from us.

Frequently asked questions

Is the iPhone 12 Pro Max worth buying in 2022?

It isn’t the latest model available in the Pro Max series of iPhones – but the 12 Pro Max is far from obsolete.

If you want more up-to-date tech, look to the iPhone 13 Pro Max. But there isn’t a huge difference between the two. So if you’re happy with 2020 technology, you can save money by going for the older 12 Pro Max.

Is now a good time to buy the iPhone 12 Pro Max?

If you find a good value deal on the iPhone 12 Pro Max on this page that matches what you need from a contract, then yes – it’s always a good time to snap up a deal.

The only exception is when a new iPhone set is on the way. This is usually in the autumn, around September or October. If that time is coming up, it may be worth waiting around to see if you want one from the latest batch.

Will the iPhone 12 Pro Max drop in price?

Most models of iPhone tend to drop in price when a new model is released. (That’s another reason why it’s worth waiting if a new set is on the way.)

You can also look out for special offers at certain times of the year – such as Black Friday or the January sales.
