Released in 2019, the iPhone 11 was a solid upgrade from 2018’s hugely-popular iPhone XR – and at a lower launch price than its predecessor.

And, at the time of writing (February 2022), it’s still a decent and capable phone. It shares the same core as its Pro and Pro Max counterparts: an A13 Bionic chip and 4GB of RAM. While it’s no longer the fastest or most powerful processor, it still performs very well for everyday use.

At release, it came with iOS 13 out the box. Luckily, Apple offers software updates long after launch, so the iPhone 11 can still support the most recent operating system, iOS 15.3.

Availability and price

The iPhone 11, along with the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max, started shipping in 2019.

At the time of release, it was priced from £729. Now, at the time of writing (February 2022), you can find it at a much more affordable price.

Unfortunately, the 256GB option is now discontinued. You won’t be able to get one directly from Apple, but you may be able to find it from third-party sites and resellers.

How good is the iPhone 11’s design and display?

The iPhone 11 more or less follows the same blueprint as 2017’s iPhone X, which marked a significant turning point for Apple at the time.

With the same edge-to-edge display – save for the camera notch at the top – and use of Liquid Retina HD technology, it’s a stunning screen. The 6.1-inch LCD screen sports a 1792 x 828-pixel resolution, with a maximum brightness of 625 nits.

The iPhone 11’s frame is smoothly curved and rounded at the corners, finished with a glossy glass back. Its sides are made from aluminium, while the 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max use stainless steel instead.

It also marks the first time Apple employed a square rear camera block in the upper-left corner – the iPhone 12 and 13 sport this design too.

How good is the iPhone 11’s camera?

The iPhone 11 features a 12MP dual rear camera, with one Wide lens at f/1.8 and one Ultra-Wide lens at f/2.4. It comes equipped with Apple’s excellent Night Mode for low-light shots, as well an improved Smart HDR system and 4K video recording at 60 frames per second.

Other than the additional telephoto lens found on the Pro models, the camera system is identical and should function the same. And, indeed, it’s still a very serviceable camera that’s great for casual snaps.

The front camera is also 12MP, and comes with an improved Face ID – Apple’s own facial recognition system.

How good is the iPhone 11’s battery life?

Packing a 3110mAh battery, the iPhone 11 lasts up to an hour longer than the iPhone XR.

It’s got a good battery life that can comfortably see you through the day, even with heavy use.

What are the key differences between the iPhone 11 and the iPhone XR?

The iPhone 11 is near identical to the iPhone XR in design, display and size. The main difference is the rear camera set-up, with the iPhone 11 sporting a dual-lens square camera block.

But looking past appearances, the iPhone 11 offers some improved functionality, including better cameras and a new processor. With new models succeeding the iPhone 11 and XR, consider which iPhone is best for you and if there's a newer model that may be more suitable.

How does the iPhone 11 compare to other flagship handsets in the UK market?

Other flagships that came out in 2019 include the Samsung Galaxy S10 and Google Pixel 4.

MoneySuperMarket's expert rating

Our rating out of five: 3.5/5

When it came out in 2019, the iPhone 11 was a solid phone. With its excellent camera, good battery life and reliable performance, it was – and still is – a great device for everyday use.

However, as expected with an “older” phone, it’s missing a few features found in the more recent flagships.

For example, it lacks 5G connectivity. So, if you live in an area where 5G is available, you won’t be able to use those ultrafast speeds.

The camera systems in the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 also come with a host of new upgrades, giving you better quality images, optical zoom and more creative control.

And the screen doesn’t contain the latest “Ceramic Shield” technology, so it’s a little more fragile.

Nevertheless, given the iPhone 11’s now discounted price, it’s a worthy option if you want to buy the phone outright and add a cheap SIM-only deal on top.

And with Apple dedicated to providing software updates up to five years after launch, you can rest assured that your device will still receive support.

Contract options

If you want to get a mobile phone contract, rather than buying the device outright, there are several ways you can get a good deal.

Take a look at the comparison table at the top of this page, where you’ll find our pick of the standout iPhone 11 contract and SIM-only deals available right now.

If you can’t see one that meets your needs, you can tailor your search by using the filters at the side of the page.

Can I get the iPhone 11 with no upfront cost?

Don’t want to pay a large amount upfront? The good news is that there are plenty of deals with no upfront cost.

That said, contracts with no upfront cost usually have higher monthly premiums. So you’ll have to find a bit more cash each month.

Can I get the iPhone 11 with unlimited data?

Of course – pretty much all networks will offer an unlimited data deal.

They’re generally a bit more expensive than contracts with data limits. But you won’t be hit by any extra charges for going over a limit, which may work out better for you.

You can see which deals are currently available using the comparison tool above. Set the data allowance filter to unlimited or high data, and choose the plan that suits you best.

What's the cheapest way to get an iPhone 11?

If you don’t want to spend too much, we’d recommend you look at iPhone 11 contracts from low-cost networks, such as Tesco Mobile or giffgaff.

You’ll most likely miss out on value-adding freebies, such as a Netflix/Spotify subscription or customer rewards schemes. But if cost is your primary criteria, that probably won’t deter you.

But, if you have the money to spare upfront, the cheapest way to get an iPhone 11 is to buy it SIM-free and add a SIM-only deal on top.

Can I get the iPhone 11 with poor credit?

It can be difficult. Networks always run credit checks on phone contracts, especially on the most recent and expensive devices.

However, as the iPhone 11 is an older model, you may have a little more luck – particularly if you look at contracts from resellers, or on a refurbished phone.

Nevertheless, as with any other phone, the best chance of getting the iPhone 11 with poor credit is to buy the handset outright. You can then buy a cheap SIM-only deal separately.

Frequently asked questions

Is the iPhone 11 worth buying in 2022?

Having been released in September 2019, the iPhone 11 is a little “old” – by smartphone standards, anyway. Nevertheless, it’s still a great and very capable device, even if not the most up to date.

The main thing to consider is that software updates run out sooner for older devices. Still, Apple is pretty reliable when it comes to providing iPhone support after launch.

Also, if you’re looking to make use of ultrafast 5G speeds, the iPhone 11 doesn’t have it.

Is now a good time to buy the iPhone 11?

If you can’t stomach the sky-high prices of the most recent iPhones, now is the ideal time to snap up an older Apple flagship for cheap.

Will the iPhone 11 drop in price?

Given that prices tend to drop when Apple releases its latest iPhone, the iPhone 11 has already undergone some significant discounts since its launch in 2019.

At the time of writing (February 2022), it’s more than a couple hundred pounds cheaper than its launch price.

Should I upgrade or wait for the 2022 model?

If you’re keen to get your hands on the most up-to-date tech, it’s probably better to upgrade to a more recent iPhone model, such as the iPhone 13.

On the other hand, if you currently have an iPhone 11 and you’re not in a rush to upgrade, you could always wait to see what the next release has to offer.
