How much do you spend on your car over a lifetime?

Family car
The average motorist will spend over £200,000 over the course of their life time keeping their car on the road, according to new research by MoneySupermarket. This is without taking into account the cost of actually buying their cars! We’ve reached these numbers using the most common age at which people pass a driving test in the UK (18), the average lifespan of males and females in Britain and current motoring costs. Female motorists will spend over £15,000 more on account of them having a longer average lifespan. Fuel is the biggest expense faced by motorists, making up over 50% of the total cost for both genders. The average male motorist would spend £106,064.25 on fuel if prices remained at their current levels, while the average female motorist would spend £217,715.26. Car insurance was the next biggest expense, with the average male spending £31,155 and the average female spending £33,015. The cost of car insurance will of course be at its highest under the age of 25 when motorists are statistically more likely to be involved in accidents and make claims. Find out how these costs are broken down in our infographic…
