Be nervous! Breakdowns threaten Xmas drivers

Thousands of Fords, Vauxhalls and Volkswagens will break down on Christmas morning – you have been warned. The bods at Warranty Direct have been crunching their numbers and have concluded that nearly 100,000 Christmas lunches are going to be delayed because so many cars break down at this time of year.

Not going, cold turkey

Warranty Direct reckons over one third (36.5%) of cars from all makes and models break down every year. Slap a bit of extrapolation on that number, and that means around 11 million cars break down in the UK every year – or 30,000 every day Including Christmas day! And if there’s an average of three people in each, it amounts to a lot of cold turkey dinners.

Par for the Corsa?

Vauxhall Corsa drivers are the most likely to be affected on the big day, says Warranty Direct. There are 1.1 million of them registered in the UK, which means close to 1,200 could break down. It doesn’t feel very festive, but WD has compiled a handy table of the cars most likely to break down on Christmas morning…

The numbers don’t look great for BMW 3-Series drivers, as the motor has the highest annual breakdown rate at 38.1%. David Gerrans, Warranty Direct managing director, said: “A huge number of families expect to travel to see relatives on Christmas day; sadly, breakdowns could result in thousands of cold turkeys. “The winter is generally tougher on many electrical and mechanical components, which can increase the chances of a breakdown. The only option is to be vigilant when it comes to maintenance.” So there’s yet another thing you need to get prepared before Christmas. Luckily, we’ve put together a quick video covering the main things you need to check before Thursday.
