3 indisputable reasons you should run your car on LPG

LPG car
Have you ever thought about converting your car to run on LPG? Here are a few reasons why you should consider it…
  1. LPG will cut your running costs

If you convert your car to run on LPG you could instantly see your fuel costs cut by as much as 40% - even though converted engines are around 15% less fuel efficient than petrol engines, lower fuel duty on LPG means it’s about half the price of both petrol and diesel. On the downside, diesel engines can’t be converted to run on LPG, and conversion costs for petrol engines are between £1,000 and £1,500 – though you should be able to make this back within the first year or two of making the switch.
  1. LPG is better for your engine

LPG is a cleaner burning fuel, which means it’s better for your engine than both petrol and diesel and could even lead to better performance and a prolonged engine life – there are loads of second-hand LPG cars for sale that have covered well over 200,000 miles.
  2. LPG is better for the environment

Just as LPG is better for your engine, so it’s also better for the environment, producing 10% less carbon dioxide, 85% less carbon monoxide and lower levels of all the other rubbish spewed out by petrol engines.

Should I buy new or used?

So you’re sold on the idea of LPG, but do you convert your current car to run on gas or buy one that’s already been converted? Although brand new cars with factory-fitted LPG systems are available all across Europe, this doesn’t extend to the UK so you won’t be able to buy a brand new car that runs on LPG. So if you’re looking to buy a new car you’ll have to buy a standard petrol-powered motor and have it converted to run on LPG by a UKLPG-approved installer. If you’re in the market for a second-hand car then it could make sense to pick up one that’s already been converted as you’ll avoid having to shell out on conversion costs – just make sure the system has been fitted by and approved installer and has the relevant certificate to prove it.

Is filling up a problem?

Although not as readily available as either petrol or diesel, LPG is sold at over 1,400 filling stations across the UK – but before you make the switch, it could be worth checking the map below to see if it’s available in your area.
