Music for Dancing / The Twist! Featuring Don Covay

King Curtis became known as one of the finest tenor sax players in the world of Hot 100 music, latterly through an impressive catalogue of his own recordings for Atlantic as well as credits for countless sessions from the mid-50s to the early 70s. Curtis enjoyed international chart success with Memphis Soul Stew in 1967, but earlier in the decade he was learning his craft playing sessions in New York, and from that time comes Music for Dancing The Twist, recorded for RCA in 1961 and now reissued on CD for the first time on Shout! Records. The theme of the album was to teach U.S. society folk to do the twist as that dance craze broke from being the province of teenagers to become an international social phenomenon. King Curtis and his combo of renowned New York sessioneers was joined by emergent soul star Don Covay who sings the vocal tracks in this collection of big band standards given the R&B treatment. Combo- King Curtis, Warren Luckey (ts) Heywood Henry (bs) Ernie Hayes (p) Paul Griffin (p), Mickey Baker, Billy Butler, Carl Lynch (g), Everett Barksdale (bass) Bob Bushnell (bass), Joe Marshall (dm) vocals by Don Covay, John Berry, Henry Ollie.
