A car stereo does not have to be used for listening to radio stations alone. Car stereos can be utilized by a number of other devices for a variety of purposes. As new digital technology develops, the amount of car stereo accessories available to the average consumer on the market has grown. Accessories for car stereos can range from those used for entertainment to devices that have a more practical application.

Some of the more popular car stereo accessories are those devices and adaptors that connect a user’s MP3 player to the car speakers. If an owner’s car has a tape deck, a car accessory known as a cassette adaptor can be used to utilise the headphone jack on an mp3 in order to play the device’s music through the car speakers. For cars that have an auxiliary audio input, a simple audio cable can take advantage of the same headphone jack on the MP3 player. If a car has neither of these features MP3 player can be connected to a device that uses a cars FM radio in order to play MP3s through radio signals straight the car’s speakers.

Other accessories that can be connected to a car’s stereo are satellite navigation devices. These sat nav devices can also use a car’s FM radio to broadcast through the car’s stereo, but some devices can also take advantage of Bluetooth technology. Directions are given verbally from the sat nav device through the car stereo so that they can be heard clearly. Mobile phones can also be connected to a car stereo through a Bluetooth signal for hands-free calling and voice commands.
