So, as a strict console gamer it’s hard for me to say this, but in many ways PC gaming is superior to console gaming. No, most cheap desktop computers aren’t quite PS3 console cheap (currently the most expensive console). And I’ll admit, online gaming isn’t relegated to the keyboard tapping, mouse clicking PC gaming world any more. Console gaming is also way easier to play and to set up as you don’t have to worry about operating system requirements and all that rubbish. Computer gaming is still better, though, because of the possibilities.
For one, PCs have higher screen resolution, and the realm of possibility for upgrading your desktop really just depends on your budget. This is potentially much cheaper than buying the newest console every year or so, and is a more sustainable option. There is no central server with down times you have to worry about; you have the entire internet at your beck and call with a PC. Also, PC games are cheap video games, cheaper than console games because they don’t have the same publishing and licensing costs as Sony or Nintendo. They have old games on Steam or GOG.com, better gameplay with mouse keyboard or controllers, better storage space—I could go on, but I think the biggest advantage to PC gaming is the ability to play the amazingly addictive MMORPG’s and other games exclusive to the PC world.
Set up with a 4 core processor, a big wad of RAM and an NVIDIA card, the PC gamer (or the mate looking for a great gift idea) can look forward to buying quintessential titles such as Starcraft II, Diablo 3, and the relationship-obliterating World of Warcraft (the Cataclysm expansion pack is coming December 7th). These are all good examples of why you should still have a PC even if you mainly enjoy console gaming. The true gamer plays where he can and with whatever he can exploring every option like a chubby, snack popping and sugar drinking Bear Grylls.
