Online Shopping vs Physical Shopping

Why do you shop online?

I do it for many reasons, but mainly because it’s convenient. Some people enjoy the physical act of shopping; of trying on clothes, poking and prodding displays, socializing with friends, being out of their houses etc. For me, shopping is purely consumptive — I just want what I want. I tell the internet what I want, via Google or comparison shopping sites, and I find the best offers on what I want.

Yes, I know you have to factor in shipping costs which may make a product more expensive (though many online retailers will waive shipping if you buy enough), and yes, there is the satisfaction of physically being able to hold and touch the product you’re interested in, but I guess online shopping fits my lifestyle better.

I don’t like the disappointment of going to the mall and not finding what I want. Online, the product options are vast and ultimately superior to physical malls the more niche your tastes are.  I also don’t like wasting my time queuing and being jostled by similarly impatient and inconsiderate people. I like the online world because I enjoy the freedom of being able to shop wherever and whenever I want to.

Another main reason why online shopping is more convenient is because of privacy. I’m sure there are certain products you enjoy that you avoid advertising about.  I personally don’t like my mates knowing that I have a taste for musicals and classical music. I know all the words to Javert’s songs in Les Misérables (And I am Javert, Do not forget my name, Do not forget me two four six ohh onnnnnnneee!!) and of course I had to pick up a copy of the Les Misérables 25th Anniversary at the O2 arena, and there it is in an inconspicuous box at my door 2 weeks later.

So, whether you’re looking for 1930s pulp classics or Andre Bocelli – Greatest Hits, the internet will always be there for you without obnoxiously ravaging your senses everywhere you turn.

About Jeffrey H.

Hi my name is Jeff Hughes. I grew up watching British TV (probably a little too young to have been watching Black Adder) and particularly enjoy watching Hugh Laurie on the screen. I studied British and American Literature at University but I wish I had been reading comic books the whole time. I enjoy pubs because I believe you can’t drink on an empty stomach. I also like cats.
