Even today, it’s easy to find a record player for sale. Vinyl has seen ebbs and flows in popularity, but it has never gone away. And while the iPod touch might be the hot new gadget of the day, do you really think it’s going to have the longevity of a 12”?
Record players and vinyl brings a distinct sound clarity that has not been reproduced by digital formats, and it also features albums that were never re-issued in digital formats. As an avid music collector and producer, I’ve stockpiled some downright terrible records. But within all the nonsense here are some of the best finds to grace the my turn table:
The Mighty Hannibal – “Hymn no. 5”
This classic was the closest the R&B/soul/funk singer had to a big time hit. Listen to this gem, and tell me you can’t feel the passion. No need for auto-tune here.
The Sylvers – “Wish That I Could Talk to You”
The Sylvers are another one of those iconic soul bands you’ve never heard of. The Jackson 5 continue to grab headlines, and are more widely known, but one listen to the Sylvers and you’ll see why they’re one of my favourites.
Marlena Shaw – “California Soul”
California livin’ isn’t just a lifestyle, it’s a state of mind. This song captures the essence of the Golden State. Put this on and tell me you’re not bobbing your head.
Menehan Street Band – “The World”
Sounds like it came out in 1973, but this is part of a long line of retro sounding soul music that’s been thrust into the world in recent years. Charles Bradley layers powerful, soulful lyrics, over a driving piano riff and catchy horns.
Lee Fields – “Do You Love Me”
Seems like everything this man released was audio gold. By far my favourite of his long list of great tracks. So much soul. And the music is simply brilliant.
