Phones as Digital Camera: Sony Ericsson k800i

Oh the places you’ll go with your new camera phone. And you’ll be sure to remember those places because of all the pictures you’ll take.  In the beginning, it was all well and good to be taking grainy and blurry pictures on our phones because of the novelty of the feature. Now, however, since most mobiles come equipped with digital cameras as a standard, we should probably be taking this feature a little more seriously.

Today I’ll be doing a quick comparison between a similar priced phone and camera, just to weigh the advantages between the two. I’m not going to look at the iPhone because Apple is getting way to much press lately and everyone knows the iPhone’s features. Instead, I’ve picked out the Sony Ericsson k800i as an example of a decent camera phone.

Aside from the camera, the Ericsson has its Bluetooth capability and it has the traditional boxy Ericsson case which I think makes it more convenient for pocket travel. The phone also has a fair sized screen which is great for its camera features. As a camera, this small contender packs a 3.2 mega pixel lens that shoots in 2048×1536 resolution. I would say that it is the flash which sets this mobile apart from all the other camera phones because it has a real Xenon flash that downplays the typical poor exposure and red-eye in mobiles.

In contrast, an actual camera like, say, the Fujifilm FinePix AX280, beats the Ericsson easily with its 14 megapixels, higher memory and the fact that it has zoom. Sony digital cameras win.

Oh, well.

What the FinePix AX280 doesn’t have is the Ericsson’s music player, the Bluetooth, web browser and 2-way video calling (or regular calling). Yes, it’s just a camera friends. Just a camera. Add all those features to the better-than-average video recorder and of course the Ericcson’s camera, and I would rather just lug this beauty around by itself.

About Jeffrey H.

Hi my name is Jeff Hughes. I grew up watching British TV (probably a little too young to have been watching Black Adder) and particularly enjoy watching Hugh Laurie on the screen. I studied British and American Literature at University but I wish I had been reading comic books the whole time. I enjoy pubs because I believe you can’t drink on an empty stomach. I also like cats.
