Big Momma’s House: Like Father Like Son

Big Momma’s House: Like Father, Like Son is the third movie in the Big Momma series. Whereas the first two were pure slapstick comedies, the third installment layers social commentary within the comedic framework.

Big Momma is back – and this time he has big backup: his teenage stepson Trent (Brandon T. Jackson) who is an aspiring rapper (imagine that). Martin Lawrence returns as FBI agent Malcolm Turner and as Turner’s deep-cover alter-ego Big Momma. Turner is joined by Trent, as they go undercover (literally) at an all girls performing arts school after Trent witnesses a murder. Posing as Big Momma and as hefty coed Charmaine, they must find the murderer before he finds them.

In Big Momma’s House: Like Father Like Son, Martin Lawrence turns in another typical Oscar-worthy performance, but the real surprise is newcomer Brandon T. Jackson. Jackson truly is the breakthrough star in this film both as Trent and as the voluptuous alter-ego Charmaine. Jackson’s turn as Trent/Charmaine is powerful and raw, reminiscent of Robert Deniro in Taxi Driver or Denzel Washington in Training Day. Jackson transforms an already great film into a masterpiece and we are sure to have many more outstanding performances from this gifted young man for years to come.

Film Critic Kam Williams puts it best: “What’s funnier than a black dude in drag? How about two black dudes in drag?”
