The investment in a new laptop or desktop computer can often leave you with quite the burning sensation in your wallet. With many manufacturers loading up your computer with trials and software you don’t want or need, you’re often left with incurring the extra cost of getting the software you really need. If you’re a bit strapped for cash, perhaps you should consider some of the excellent free software available.
Ubuntu
If you’re looking for an alternative to Mac OS X or Windows 7, Ubuntu provides a great solution. Ubuntu is a slick, open source, Linux operating system. Some of the advantages of it include low system requirements, loads of customization, extremely easy and fast installation of loads of free ware programs, and also an active, helpful community of users.
Open Office
For years there has been little alternative to the juggernaut that is Microsoft Office 2010. That is, until the unveiling of Open Office. It’s an entirely free software bundle with the same functionalities of Office. The open source nature of the code means users are constantly creating add-ons as well as updates. Very stable, and a very good program.
Google Docs
Another excellent alternative, or complement, to MS Office. Google Docs allows you to collaborate with co-workers and class mates on a variety of Office documents. However, it also gives you the opportunity to create new documents. It might not offer the exact depth of Office, but it definitely gives you quite a few powerful tools for something that costs nothing.
Skype
Skype offers users the opportunity to make voice calls via the internet. Calls to other Skype users are totally free of charge, and the service comes with loads of other free offerings, including video conferencing, instant messaging, and file sharing. Although calls from Skype to mobile phones and land lines cost money, you get quite a bit without forking over any money.
VLC media player
A great media player that handles loads of file types. In addition to handling any of the standard formats you could need, it also has loads of codex built in, saving you the hassle of trying to find the proper plug-in for a different player.
