Digital Cameras Best Buys for the Life Aquatic

For most, the onset of autumn means resigning to shorter days, less sunshine, and a slow descent into rain and fog.  For me, it means packing up my snorkeling equipment and heading for balmier climates. Be the envy of your office this fall by getting away and coming back with pictures that wow.

My October/November destination of choice is Bali, but for you it may be Santorini, Nice, Ibiza, or even the beautiful Cinque Terre of Italy.  Regardless of where you choose, you’ll need a few items to make the most of your vacation.  If you’re like me and can’t wait to get your fins in the water, consider picking up a wetsuit for your trip.  Flying in the fall may result in lower airfares, but ocean temperatures will be considerably cooler as well.  To avoid shelling out big sums for a wetsuit, search ahead for dive centers and hotel deals that include wetsuit rentals.

Once you’re in the water, you’ll want a good camera to capture all the glorious sea life below you.  There is a wide variety of underwater camera options available online, but I would suggest taking a look at some of the newer peripherals available for your existing camera.  A good option for Canon and Nikon users is to check out the line of underwater housing cases made by Fantasea.  These products may run you between 100 and 150 pounds, but compared to the prospect of buying a brand new underwater camera, they’re actually quite a good value.  As a casual photographer who needs a bit more than disposable cameras can offer but isn’t quite ready to bring SLR cameras into the water with me, these cases are the perfect compromise.

My favourite of the bunch is the Fantasea FA-480 Housing for the Canon Powershot.  The case provides airtight protection for my camera, and knowing that I can go back to snapping daily life straight out of the water provides me with comfort and a happy wallet.  While this is quite clearly the best course for those already using digital cameras, even those who have yet to make the jump would be wise to check out digital cameras best buys online before throwing down for a limited-function underwater camera.

About Jeff O.

Got a music question? Put it here, I got ya. I'm a Yank with a discerning eye and a taste for Robbie Williams power ballads. In real non-internet life I'm a fickle shopper, but put me in the online arena and I'll do work. I may even give you one of those cool intricate handshakes we Americans are famous for.
