  • Christmas shopping brings out aggressive side in men

New research released today shows that men are twice as likely as women to turn to violence when out Christmas shopping. A statistic reflected in the fact that 70 per cent of people have admitted to finding Christmas high street shopping stressful.

In a study carried out by moneysupermarket Shopping, one in ten men admit to having had a fight with another shopper, physically or verbally, whilst out buying festive gifts. The research also shows one in every 14 men has shouted at a shop assistant and one in 12 has been involved in an incident of  Christmas shopping road rage.

For women, the stress of Christmas high street shopping manifests itself in other ways. Almost half (47 per cent) have suffered a headache when gift shopping and women are twice as likely to burst into tears as men.

Regionally, men in London are the most confrontational shoppers, followed by the Scots and then the Geordies.  Men in the South West are the least likely to turn to violence when filling their Christmas stocking.  Interestingly, one in every 100 men also reports having broken a heel while out Christmas shopping.

Rob Barnes, Head of moneysupermarket Shopping said: "This research emphasises how emotional people can become when out Christmas shopping.  The stress it puts both men and women under goes some way to explaining why 27 million people are planning to do their Christmas shopping online this year.  Open 24 hours, seven days a week and with savings of up to 20 per cent compared to the high street, online punch-ups and broken heels are rare."
