One of the most noteworthy design changes from Apple has been the removal of the headphone jack.
The traditional 3.5mm headphone jack is replaced with a Lightning port connection (usually used for charging or connecting to your laptop).
The iPhone 7/7 Plus is compatible with wireless Lightning ‘AirPods’ – wireless earphones which use infrared technology to pick up when the pods are near your ears, as well as motion sensors and voice recognition (through Siri) to detect when your iPhone is being used.
The AirPods are expected to last for up to five hours and come with a charging case that will boost battery life by 24 hours.
An adapter will be provided with new orders which will allow you to use your existing headphones if they don’t have wireless capabilities, but you won’t be able to charge your phone at the same time.
AirPods will set you back around £159 and will work alongside iPads, Macs and Apple’s watch.
Improved camera, video and audio capabilities
The new and improved 12MP camera comes with optical image stabilisation, a QUAD LED True Tone flash and a six-element shooting lens. This will allow for better pictures in low light and brighter and more detailed shots. As much as 50% more light will be picked up by the camera sensors compared to the iPhone 6s.
For those that love taking selfies or using FaceTime, the front facing camera is 7MP and comes with a Retina Flash to capture natural looking portraits.
Video capabilities are also impressive, allowing you to shoot 4K videos, slow motion videos and time-lapse videos.
Stereo speakers are also included which are twice as loud as the iPhone 6s.
Colour finishes, aesthetics and storage options
Apple has summed up its newest iPhone offering in a few simple words – two sizes; five finishes.
Both versions of the iPhone 7 have been constructed with versatile 7000 Series aluminium and come in silver, gold, rose gold and two new colour options in the form of matte black and gloss black.
Rear antenna bands, which help boost your signal, have been removed from the back and placed on the sides of the model.
The iPhone 7 will come in 32GB, 128G, 256GB, but won’t come with a 16GB version like in previous years.
The iPhone 7 is Apple’s first water-resistant mobile phone. It is resistant against spills and splashes. It has a waterproof rating of IP67, in line with Samsung and other competitors.
Rebooted Home Button & Screen Resolution
The Home button comes with a host of new features. It’s become more responsive, thanks to a new Taptic Engine that is pressure sensitive and vibrates when touched. It promises to offer a smoother experience instead of having to push down on the physical home button displayed in former models.
Operating systems & battery life
The A10 Fusion chip included in the iPhone 7 promises faster processing speeds and can work at twice the speed of the iPhone 6. Apple’s most advanced chip also promises an additional two hours of battery life compared to previous iPhone models.
The iPhone 7 will also come with iOS 10 software. iOS 10 comes with a redesigned Apple Maps and Apple Music and Siri has been improved to allow you to transcribe voicemails, search or image and write messages.
iPhone 7 Plus design specification
The iPhone 7 Plus will be slightly larger than the iPhone 7, measuring 5.5-inches compared to the 7’s 4.7-inches and is around 50 grams heavier.
It has a screen resolution of 1920 x 1080, over the iPhone 7’s 1334 x 750, and the camera has been boosted with telephonic cameras, along with wide angle technology as seen found in the iPhone 7.
The battery of the iPhone 7 Plus will be an hour longer than the iPhone 6 Plus and up to 60 hours of wireless video playback is possible (over the iPhone 7’s 40 hours).
