The successor to the Compact IV, T-Mobile’s MDA Compact V dramatic black slab of a PDA is packed full of functionality, including a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, full 3.2-inch touchscreen and the Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system. Designed primarily for business users, the V has mobile versions of Microsoft office applications: Word, Excel and PowerPoint, plus a PDF viewer, for example, plus A-GPS satellite navigation (a subscription service).

For internet connectivity, there is fast HSDPA technology and Wi-fi, plus Bluetooth for short-range wireless data transfer. The screen is a WVGA offering with 800 x 480 resolution screen, which gives pin sharp video and internet viewing. The music player supports all the popular formats, plus an FM radio with TouchFlo swipe technology for easy navigation.

T-Mobile has added in a widget screen to the TouchFlo interface where you can put pre-defined widgets to the likes of BBC and eBay, or add your own links, too. There is also a link to the TV portal, with the opportunity to subscribe to the likes of Sky. Another addition is a multi-platform Instant Messaging client, so you can chat via the likes of G-Mail, AOL, Yahoo! Messenger or MSN Messenger.

This sleek, stylish device has 288 Mbytes’ RAM, 512 MB ROM and a microSD card slot. Battery life is rated at up to five hours’ talk time and 500 on standby from a full charge.
