The Sony Ericsson W595 Sakura edition is a slider phone with an outstanding music player (Walkman 3.0) within a strong overall feature set. Sakura is Japanese for cherry blossom and good fortune. Celebrating chic with its unique flower design, matching charm, carrier pouch, the Sakura edition also comes with in-built floral themes that "react and change depending on the time of day", says Sony Ericsson.
Among its toys are a 3.2 megapixel camera and “shake control” that lets you change to a new track simply by giving the phone a flick. The motion sensor also auto-rotates between portrait and landscape viewing of photos.
On the music front, you can create and manage playlists, shuffle songs and equalise, while album art is displayed when music is playing. The supplied software lets you transfer music from PC to phone, and rip music from CDs. It has excellent audio quality through the stereo speakers, via a conventional stereo headset or a wireless Bluetooth stereo headset. The MegaBass feature helps enhances bass frequencies for a fuller sound. There is also an FM radio with RDS.
At 100 X 47 x 14 mm, the W595 is comfortably chunky, but at 104g, not weighty. There is 40 Mbytes of internal memory, but a 2GB memory card (enough for around 500 MP3 tracks) is supplied and the phone supports additional card storage up to 8 GB.
The W595 is a quadband phone, with 3G HSDPA, supporting video calling. There are comprehensive messaging options (SMS, MMS, email) and a host of now expected smartphone features, including vibration alert, organiser, animated wallpaper and sound recorder.
Battery life is rated at nine hours’ talk time (GSM); 4.5 hours (3G) and 365 hours on standby.
