The Samsung S8000 – otherwise known as the “Jet”, in dramatic black, is an ultra-thin (11.9 mm) dinky device, although it does weigh in at 110g. It features AMOLED (active matrix organic light-emitting diode) touchscreen technology for its 3.1-inch, 480 x 800 pixels high resolution display: this is the latest thing, suitable for ultra-thin devices because it does not require a backlight.
It’s as much a phone for the way it looks as the actual hardware – the full QWERTY keyboard is a bit tricky to use, for example, in landscape mode. The 5 megapixel camera is good value with dual LED flash, geo-tagging, image stabilization, face detection, Smile Shot and Wide Dynamic Range (WDR), plus a music player and D1 video recorder (30fps), with DivX/XviD support, Wi-fi and GPS.
Quad-band roaming and 3G HSDPA for fast internet browsing, an accelerometer for screen auto rotate and turn-to-mute, an electronic compass and FM radio with RDS – all add to what amounts to a “tick most boxes” package – including a standard 3.5mm headphone jack on the top, just like an iPlayer.
The Jet makes use of Cube-style menu interaction, run by a 3D-cube style button on the front, which has the same kind of functionality as the menu button on S60 devices. The Jet’s TouchWiz 2.0 interface has Motion UI and Media Gate 3D: an intuitive six-sided cube interface that you flick on screen for quick and easy access to six key multimedia features, such as Photo album, Music player, Video player, FM Radio, Games and internet.
There is 2 Gbytes’ internal storage and a hot-swappable micro-SD card slot for up to 16 GB additional capacity. All in all, the Jet lives up to its billing.
