The Samsung Genio Qwerty (or B3210) is a Blackberry style PDA built with messaging in mind. The 2.2-inch landscape screen sits above a full four-row QWERTY keyboard. It has some basic obligatories: a 2 megapixel camera with video capability, multimedia player with FM radio and some nice surprises, such as a standard 3.5mm jack enabling you to use your own choice of headset.

The 2.2-inch screen is low resolution (176 x 144 pixels) but is sufficient for its text-centric workload. The device itself measures 112 x 60 x 13mm and weighs 94g.

The B3210 has GPRS, HSCSD and EDGE, but it is not designed for – or can deliver -fast Web browsing. However, you can check emails and plod through the Web. It is an entry-level device that has some excellent functionality at low cost – ideal for the addicted texter rather than the serious smartphone aspirant. As well as SMS, it supports MMS and instant messaging and has a built-in email client supporting up to five email accounts and allowing you to view (but not edit) email attachments. There is Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP included for short-range wireless data transfer and for using a wireless headset.

The Genio range is targeting users who want fun and funky without paying through the nose, so compromises are made: a fixed focus camera, but a radio with RDS. There are fashion jackets (back panels) to add colour and perhaps coordination as an accessory.

Internal memory is only 37Mbytes but the card slot can expand this to 8GB. Battery life is rated at an excellent 7.5 hours’ talk time or 390 hours on standby from a full charge.
