Compare Pre Deals

The Palm Pre is an iPhone “killer” PDA and the first phone to use the webOS operating system. The screen is smaller than the iPhone but similar resolution so looks that much sharper.  Its slide-out QWERTY keyboard might be tricky for big-thumbed users and there is no virtual keyboard option, but once the touch-sensitive interface becomes familiar, it is clear the Pre is crammed with business-oriented functionality.

The Pre is a quad-band device so has the potential for global roaming. It can browse the Web with 3.5G HSDPA data speed, backed up by GPRS/EDGE where 3G is unavailable, and Wi-fi hotspot wireless, infrared and Bluetooth short-range wireless. There is 8 Gbytes’ internal storage but no memory slot.

It has a 3.2 megapixel camera without autofocus or video recording, but with flash. The music player supports the most popular formats and the Pre has a standard 3.5 mm jack, enabling you to use your own choice of headset.  There is the usual gamut of utilities from vibrate alert to spearkerphone. Battery life is rated at five hours’ talk time or 250 hours on standby from a full charge.

Ultimately, the Pre is a contender rather than an out and out winner for the PDA honours, but will certainly have its advocates.
