Continuing its challenge to the BlackBerry, Nokia has gone further than ever with the E71 in battleship grey. It offers full support for push email, attachment editing and web browsing and full multimedia capabilities, including a 3.2 megapixel camera, video calling and a media player – plus GPS.

The 2.36-inch (240 x 320 pixel resolution) gives a good space for working on emails and documents or viewing Web page and uses an active matrix LCD for good visibility and clarity, even in moderate sunlight.

A business user’s phone, the Nokia E71 is great for messaging, notably push email and texting, supporting the major email protocols, attachments and Nokia Intellisync Wireless Email. There is a 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash, video recording capability, music player (again, all the common formats) and FM radio.

The quadband E71 (with 3G) can be used handsfree, with either a handsfree speaker or a Bluetooth wireless headset, combined with both speaker-dependent and speaker-independent voice dialling. You can set the phone to answer automatically when using a headset or a car kit. Like many smartphones, the Nokia includes integrated A-GPS satellite navigation, with the Nokia Maps pre-installed.

The built-in browser can handle XHTML, Javascript, stylesheets and Flash, so is able to display most websites correctly. You can use the Navi™Key to zoom in on web pages. Internal memory is 110 Mbytes, with up to 8 GB of microSD card memory.

Battery life is rated at 4.5 hours (3G) and 10.5 hours (2G) talk time and 400 hours (166 using WLAN) on standby from a full charge.
