The entry-level Nokia 1208 phone is a classic Nokia monoblock design that is both light (under 80g) and robust with a velvety keypad beneath a CSTN (96 x 68 pixels) screen. It is also refreshingly simple: you can make calls and send texts – and that is about it.

A dual-band device, the 1208 is tough and dependable in what it offers, with a dust-resistant keypad and built-in torch. With no internet, GPS or even Bluetooth, it is great reminder of what mobile phones actually do: make calls and do SMS (with an inbox for up to 60 messages) , multiple message sending, picture messaging, speed dialling and message distribution lists.

The utilities are ubiquitous among higher-end phones (and, lets face it, that’s about every other phone around) but they are far more likely to be used on the 1208 because they are not simply absorbed in a welter of more sophisticated features, including alarm clock, time faces (analogue and digital), countdown timer, stopwatch, calculator, converter, one touch shortkeys, flashlight and power save mode.

While offering only 4 Mbytes’ internal memory, there is little for the 1208 to store and the battery life is excellent, rated at seven hours’ talk time or 365 hours on standby from a full charge.
