LG’s KP500 Cookie in dramatic black is a touchscreen phone for those on a budget, so some higher-end features are omitted. Compact but with a large (3-inch) touchscreen display that is easy and fun to use. Moreover, it is touchscreen-driven phone (not just one with touch-sensitive buttons) controlled by pressing virtual buttons and icons with your finger or the stylus comes with it. All good for displaying the results of the 3 megapixel camera with digital zoom and the video camera.
This is a quad-band phone for global roaming and EDGE for fast internet connection (2.5G, in effect), though 3G would have been nice for easier browsing. There are SMS, MMS and email messaging options and short-range wireless via Bluetooth (but no Wi-fi).
The KP500 is thin (only 12 mm), light (89g) and also has a built-in accelerometer: it senses which way is up and automatically rotates the display. The virtual QWERTY keyboard slides into view when you turn the phone to landscape mode and the accelerometer is also used when playing games - you can tilt and turn the phone Wii-style to control movement. You can shake and flip the phone at other times to control various functions, though can attract attention on a crowded train.
The music player supports all the popular formats and there is an FM radio. Office-type functions include a 1,000-name capacity phone book and there is a vibration alert and speakerphone.
