Rugged phones have their own followers and their own evolutionary path.The next generation includes the Landrover S1. It is not just aimed at the Duke of Edinburgh Award types, but for outdoor people everywhere. The S1 is the world's first GSM handset that is rated IP-67: this means it can be submersed in water up to one metre for up to 30 minutes and still function, it is impervious to dust, dirt, shocks and drops. It can be dropped, dunked or otherwise abused it will still not break.

The S1 can, says manufacturer Sonim, withstand submerging in water for up to 30 minutes and is resistant to pressure up to 400 kg. It can be dropped on concrete without a scratch, thanks to the coated rubber layer surrounding the handset.

So what has this device got by way of communication? For starters: loud speakers that adjust to the noise level in your environment, so even if you are on a building site you will here your phone ring. Its 1.7-inch screen is low-resolution but acceptable in the circumstances. There is built-in GPS, FM radio and WAP browser with a decent speed and the Opera Web browser, plus a waterproof 2 megapixel camera with flash and a torchlight option.

Of course, the biggest challenge for what is a tough if grunt-level phone is the battery – 10 days with careful use is a reasonable expectation.
