The yellow and black livery is logo is eye-catching, like a bumble bee – the colours of the logo of JCB: this is the JCB Tough - arguably the most durable mobile phone ever made available to the general public. Like one of the world’s renowned heavy equipment producers, the monoblock Tough can survive the knocks, drops and soakings that would leave most other handsets recycling fodder.

Shock, dust, water and drop resistant, the Tough has a glare- and scratch-resistant screen – and it is the only phone on the market that comes with a three-year warranty and a rating of IP53 (in ruggedised parlance, that’s high!). It has regular features – colour screen, tri-band roaming and basic GPRS signal. There is Bluetooth for short-range wireless data transfer with compatible devices, such as a laptop, and USB cable connectivity.

The Tough actually has a dual speaker to help calls stay audible in noisy environments. The phone’s advertisers have driven over it, dropped it into cement and water: it truly is a tough beast. At 113 x 50 x 22 mm, the Tough is comfortably solid to hold and weighs a hefty 130g.

No frills, no memory card, but it can take a good kicking. Battery life is rated at 4 hours’ talk time and 200 hours on standby from a full charge.
