The HTC Touch 3G builds on the success of the best-selling HTC Touch, adding fast 3G internet speeds and video calling. The 2.8-inch touch screen is ultra-responsive thanks to TouchFlo technology, taking full advantage of the high-speed HSDPA connectivity for Web surfing. Windows Mobile Professional 6.1 enables full synchronisation of emails, contacts and appointments directly from a PC/laptop.
Wi-Fi can make connection even faster and the default browser – Opera – is quick and efficient. However, there is no landscape viewing option nor an accelerometer.
Measuring 102 x 54 x 15mm and weighing only 96g, the Touch 3G comes with a stylus, which fits into a side recess. The casing is a slightly rubberised plastic that feels weirdly warm to the touch.
The 3.2 mega pixel camera, but no flash or autofocus. Windows Media Player and Audio Manager are included, while for music there is a fully customisable 10-band graphic equaliser with 21 presets – but no standard 3.5 mm jack for your own headset. Internal memory is meagre at 256 Mbytes, but there is a microSD card slot.
Office Mobile is on board too, allowing you to create and read Word and Excel documents and view PowerPoint docs and PDFs, along with A-GPS, which uses Google Maps (as a subscription service). More pocket-friendly than the iPhone, the Touch 3G is fast smartphone, though with some surprising omissions.
