The HTC Tattoo is a bargain basement version of HTC’s top-of-the-ra+nge devices. Featuring the Linux-related Android mobile operating system, you can download applications from Android Market. You can also access all Google software, such as Maps, Mail and Docs, plus social networking sites. In essence, it’s the Hero for a mass market.

There is a well furnished suite of applications: Google Maps, Twitter, YouTube for starters and you can download the likes of Spotify and Skype for free, while customising the seven home screens with wallpapers and widgets.

The  resistive touchscreen is smaller than average at 2.8 inches, but it packs in 3.5G/HSDPA  for fast internet working, with a full HTML flash-enabled browser which loads both mobile-optimised and regular pages in a few seconds. As a quad-band phone, it has the potential for global roaming.

There is a Wi-fi for hotspot and WLAN connectivity, sat-nav and Bluetooth for short-range wireless data transfer and SMS, MMS and email messaging options. It also features a 3 megapixel camera with autofocus and  video recording capabilities. The music player supports all popular file format and an FM radio and there is a wealth of personal organiser utilities from a digital compass to a standard 3.5 mm headphone jack.

Battery life is rated at 6.5 hours’ GSM talk time and 340 hours on standby from a full charge.
