Compare Hero Graphite Deals
HTC is the current market leader when it comes to Windows Mobile smartphones and the first phone manufacturer to realize the full potential of the Google Android operating system. Both merits come to fruition in the HTC Hero device.
The Hero in Graphite feels very solid in the hand, although the casing is made of a soft-touch material - Teflon on the white version to prevent dirt. It features a 5.0 megapixel camera, augmented by the big 3.2-inch touchscreen (320 x 480 HVGA resolution) screen. It records both stills and video, toggled between with a simple on-screen button, and has basic white balance, brightness and flicker adjustment. There’s also a self-timer and optional geotagging.
Connectivity options include quadband GSM and 3G HSDPA with GPRS/EDGE for fast Web links, with Wifi, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR with A2DP support, and of course USB 2.0 (cable connection). The Hero also has A-GPS sat-nav, a digital compass and an accelerometer.
The “HTC Sense” project, looking at the user interface, is the culmination of three years’ work, taking the basic Android operating system and making more visually appealing and functionally more immediate. There is much to learn – homescreen “panes”, widgets, trackerball control – but it’s both leading-edge and fun to operate.
Battery life is rated at four hours’ GSM talk time and a huge 750 hours on standby.
