The BlackBerry 8820 is a business device pure and simple. Weighing 136 g, it does not try to be discreet or pocket-friendly, but then why should it? It is designed for industrial-strength business use, with WiFi 802.11 capability, for example, for any time, anywhere hotspot connectivity to the Web, LAN or compatible device.

Its dimensions of 114 x 66 x 14 mm are chunky without being impossible and pride of place is the excellent 2.4-inch display – ideal for the showing the results of the full QWERTY keyboard, with the functions controlled by trackerball navigation.

The cellular side is governed by GPRS/EDGE, which providers acceptably fast internet: the 8820 scans available networks then you choose which one you would like to connect to - it also tells you what, if any, encryption is enabled for that network. You can save the network profile to a list for future connections, which can be re-prioritised, should there be a choice of networks available.

For light relief from the rigours of uncompromising commerce, the 8820 has a media player that synchronizes with given software from Roxio. You can drag and drop music, photos and videos on to the Blackberry.

The office functions are legion, including hands-free, a document viewer that supports Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint among others, and there is GPS navigation as a pay-for subscription.

Battery life is rated at up to five hours’ talk time and 520 hours on standby from a full charge.
