RIM's BlackBerry Curve 8310 in startling pink is a fully-featured smartphone for professionals everywhere. Its special feature is a built-in GPS receiver, ready for any commercial location-based software.

A quad-band phone suitable for the global traveller, the 8310 is geared up to the world of business, offering a speakerphone, voice-activated dialing, smart dialing, *conference calling and speed dialling. It includes advanced audio technology that cancels out background noise, including echo - and automatically increases the volume in noisy environments, such as airport lounges or railway platforms.

There is a 2 megapixel camera with 5 x digital zoom and flash, though no video recording and a card slot for additional memory to save those pictures. Messaging options include SMS, MMS, instant messaging (using the proprietary BlackBerry Messenger client) and email. Internet access is via GPRS, with EDGE (2.5 rather than full 3G).

For receiving emails, an attachment viewer opens most file formats - Microsoft Word, PDFs, JPEGs et al. The 8310 includes Bluetooth 2.0 support enabling a stereo wireless headset, hands-free kits and over short distances, compatible devices such as a laptop, for data exchange.

There is a 2 megapixel camera with a 5 x zoom and a built-in flash, but no video recording capabilities and a host of personal organiser functions, such as calculator and alarms. The media player onboard supports all major file formats and there is 64 MB flash (internal) memory and a microSD card slot.

The Curve battery is rated for up to four hours’ talk time and 17 days of standby from a full charge.
