A candidate for one of the seven wonders of the modern world, Apple’s iPhone with its touchscreen user interface is truly a marvel, combining phone, music player, *camera and Web browser in one pocket-easy device.

Running Apple’s OX X operating system, the iPhone has icons  on the 3.5-inch display (480 x 320 pixels resolution) instead of buttons or a joystick. So, for example, touch the phone icon and the address book appears; tap a name and it initiates a call: the start of a truly amazing experience that is soon taken for granted!

As an iPod, too, it plays music and videos (for up to 24 hours in one charge) with 4 or 8 Gbytes’ flash memory for storage (around 2,000 songs that can always be downloaded on the move from iTunes). There is the Safari Web browser – great for the “mobile” Web facilitated by EDGE technology, plus Wi-fi wireless connectivity at “hotspots” on the move.

The iPhone is quite heavy (135g) for a phone and it has only a 2 megapixel camera – nor is it 3G-enabled: “It's like a Ferrari with a top speed electronically limited to 30 mph” says one reviewer – perhaps a little harshly.

Battery life is rated at up to eight hours’ talk time and 250 hours on standby from a full charge.
