The Alcatel OT-303 is one of a new breed of entry-level phones that unashamedly do what they say on the tin: they make calls, send texts and not much else. That said, they have the reliability and robustness of the original classic mobiles but with modern style – and the simplicity is reflected in its aggressive price point.
Alcatel’s range is designed for anyone who wants simplicity in their mobile phone, who is not seduced by the amazing technical wizardry of a top-end smartphone or beguiled by some fashion-centric device. The OT-303 exemplifies this approach: an attractive-looking, basic-featured phone in striking red.
At 107.0 x 46.0 x 12.1mm, its dimensions are standard fare – nicely slim – but surprisingly light at only 66g. The screen is traditional size and only 128 x 160 pixels resolution – but crisp and clear for its duties: texting and showing call details.
A dual-band phone, the OT-303 is designed primarily for UK use as a first-time or perhaps spare device. Yes, the camera is very basic: VGA (640 x 480 pixels), but it is not marketed to be more than a snapshot device, amid a host of useful functions. It can store up to 800 numbers and details of the last 20 incoming, outgoing and lost calls. There is an alarm, calculator, vibration alert, speakerphone, calendar, predictive texting and an FM radio.
The rated battery life is excellent at around nine hours’ talk time and up to 300 hours on standby.
