Compare X960 Deals

Acer, a relative newcomer to the smartphone market, offers the X960 - a curate’s egg of a device with a generous 2.8-inch touch screen and quality 480x640 pixel TFT display, but no accelerometer (which changes the orientation of the display as the phone is rotated), for example.

The touchscreen is not the most responsive on the market and the stylus, though well designed ergonomically, is somewhat bendy and fragile: you need it to use the on-screen QWERTY keyboard. It links to the internet via 3.5G/HSDPA, with Wi-fi for hotspot and WLAN use on the move, backed up by Bluetooth for short-range wireless data transfer. It also offers SiRFstar III GPS sat-nav.

There is a 3.2 megapixel (maximum 2048x1536 pixels resolution) camera with LED flash, video (with a secondary camera for video calling at the front) and Windows Media Player for music and video playback: you can play back video in landscape mode if you set it to full screen, but it doesn’t happen automatically.

At 106.4 x 59 x 13.7 mm and weighing 131.5g, the X960 is chunky and robust to the feel, and gives a full day’s use before needing to be re-charged.
