Compare Liquid A1 Deals

The Android operating system is fast gaining representation among the major manufacturers and Acer’s first example is the Liquid A1. Launched in December 2009, it is one of the most responsive touchscreen smartphones around. The capacitive touchscreen comprises a big 3.5-inch, 460 x 800 pixels resolution display, set into a body that is almost identical (115 x 63 x 12.5 mm) in size and weight to an iPhone.

Running Android 1.6 (known as Donut, in Android-speak), this quad-band monoblock device has fast internet via 3.5G HSDPA, Wi-fi for hotspot connectivity and Bluetooth for short-range data transfer. In keeping with today’s smartphones there is A-GPS (sat-nav) and a welcome standard 3.5mm jack for your own choice of headphone. There are few widget surprises, but there are three concealed LEDs embedded in the top that display information relating to charging, calls and messages.

Sound quality is excellent, including the speakerphone. An ambient light sensor adjusts screen brightness automatically, which helps conserve battery life (around two day’s use from a full charge, which is longer than the HTC Hero which uses an identical battery). A power management widget also enables you turn off GPS and other draining apps as required in emergency.

The Liquid has an up-coming regular feature: a proximity sensor, which turns off the buttons when a call is held to the ear. A five megapixel camera and up to 32 GB’ memory card storage, plus a host of free apps downloadable from the Android Shop, ensure the Liquid ticks all the essential boxes for a classy, highly responsive smartphone.
