What strikes you immediately about the Acer F900 smartphone is the 3.8-inch, 800 x 480 pixels resolution touchscreen set into a stylish, thin (12.3 mm) body designed by Acer subsidiary E-Ten. This is the complete 3G device, measuring 117.5 x 63.5 mm and running on Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system, with something to offer the general as well as the business user.

Announced at Mobile World Congress in February 2009, the F900 offers GPS navigation, HSDPA for fast internet working and HSUPA for fast data transfer. Naturally, there is Wi-fi for hotspot/WLAN connectivity and Bluetooth 2.0. It runs a full Windows Office Mobile suite of applications, with document creation, PC connection and synchronisation. The user interface is mercifully straightforward: a graphical representation of your office desk with updated information on texts, appointments and email.

A 3.2 megapixel camera has autofocus and LED flash, the video playback is crisp and you can use your own Bluetooth A2DP wireless headset (there is no standard 3.5 mm headset jack, though). The music player uses Windows mobile  Media Player, there is an FM radio and a host of utilities including speakerphone.

The memory slot takes microSD cards up to 32GB. A memory optimisation tool automatically restarts the device if memory falls below a certain level – the F900 will keep going at full pelt for a day or so before needing a re-charge.
