You read that right – You’ll never see Siri working on an iPhone 4.
Now, before you get angry at Apple for such naked profiteering, slow down a second.
Apparently, the reason for this is because the iPhone 4′s chip simply doesn’t have the audio processing power that the 4S has. Now, this will come as a surprise to anyone who has read the stories of various internet wizards hacking their iPhone 4, but Linley Gwennap of the Linley group (known as “The Industry’s leading experts in communications semiconductor markets”) has analysed the hardware inside the various iPhones and has come to the conclusion that the iPhone 4S imply has power that the 4 does not.
Essentially, the A4 chip doesn’t feature the same version of the advanced audio cleaning technology found on the A5, so while Siri will start up on an iPhone 4, it simply won’t work properly (if at all).
Apple are famous for only releasing perfect products, and it’s likely that releasing Siri with the iPhone 4 would have crippled its capabilities somewhat – going against everything the fruity hardware manufacturer stands for. Linley says “This technology is critical for the new phone because not only does it improve call quality, it blocks out background noise when users provide voice commands to Siri, the intelligent assistant built into the iPhone 4S. Without this noise reduction, Siri would be unusable even with a modest amount of background noise”, and we’re compelled to agree with him. The man clearly knows his stuff…
