What is an RSS feed?

RSS (Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary) is a method of distributing, or syndicating, links to content on your website that others can use. In simple terms, RSS is a tool that allows you to identify content you’re interested in and have it delivered directly to you.

The beauty of RSS is that it allows you to stay up-to-date without having to trawl the web for all the latest information. It also makes it quick and easy to obtain information from a wide range of sources.

What is a ‘news reader’ and how do I subscribe to RSS feeds?

To subscribe to RSS feeds you need access to a ’news reader’. This device allows you to display the content held in a site’s RSS file.

There are numerous news readers available, some of which are web-based (accessed via a browser) and others that are downloadable applications. Some browsers, such as Firefox, have integrated news readers that automatically pick up RSS feeds. We have listed popular news readers below - this is not an exhaustive list and others can be found by performing a search on Google.
