Sainsbury's credit card guide

Sainsbury’s Finance offers a range of financial products including credit cards, personal loans, savings accounts, car insurance, home insurance and travel insurance.

The traditional high street banks are facing increasing competition from other companies offering financial and insurance products; and the supermarkets are among the most aggressive as they seek to build their market share.

Sainsbury’s Finance offers some highly competitive products including four credit cards. Two of its cards are only available to Nectar cardholders (Nectar is the loyalty scheme Sainsbury’s shoppers benefit from – you earn points each time you shop at Sainsbury’s).

The Sainsbury’s Credit Card (only available to Nectar cardholders) has a 0% offer - you benefit from 12 month interest-free period on purchases and balance transfers, although with this card you will not earn Nectar points on your spend.

To earn Nectar points on your shopping there is the Sainsbury's Nectar Credit Card - you will earn Nectar points each time you spend on the card anywhere and double points on your Sainsbury's shopping in the first two years. The Sainsbury's Nectar Credit Card offers a reasonably competitive 12.9% APR on purchases and balance transfers, but offers no 0% period so it is best to take out this card only if you are planning to pay the balance off in full every month.

If you don’t have a Nectar card, you can still apply for a Sainsbury’s credit card which currently also offers 12 month interest-free period on purchases and balance transfers other spending, although the APR is slightly higher at 16.9% APR vs 15.9% for a Nectar account holder.

The newest card to be added to Sainsbury’s portfolio is the Gold card, a good card for regular travellers.  It comes with a £5 monthly fee, but unlike most credit cards, when you use it abroad, there are no foreign transactions fees and no ATM withdrawal fees. This card is also different from most of its rivals because you will not be charged interest on cash withdrawals as long as you repay your statement balance in full. One of the biggest perks of the card is that it comes with comprehensive travel insurance - a worldwide annual policy covering a family of up to six children and winter sports.   You will also benefit from Nectar points when you spend on this card, although you do not have to be a Nectar account holder to qualify.

Unless you have a specific reason for not wanting a Nectar card, it’s worth applying for one – it won’t cost you anything and you can get an application form in any Sainsbury’s store or online at nectar.com. As well as earning points each time you shop in Sainsbury’s you can also collect points from other partners including Homebase, amazon.co.uk, EDF Energy and comet.co.uk.

Glossary of terms

APR

This stands for Annual Percentage Rate. Any firm that lends money is required by law to quote the APR. Introductory rates do not include arrangement fees you may be charged and also don’t reflect any higher rate of interest that your borrowings will ultimately revert to. The APR takes into account the interest on a loan plus and additional charges making it easier for you to compare products. In general, the lower the APR the better the deal.

Balance Transfer

Balance transfer rates are applied to existing card debt that is being moved from one issuer to another or a consolidation of other debts. These rates tend to be lower than standard rates and apply to the debt transferred or consolidated for a specified term or until it is repaid in full.

Credit Card

Credit cards are a form of borrowing used to purchase goods and services, to obtain cash advances and for consolidating debt.

Direct Debit

This allows an organisation to take money directly from a persons bank account

Minimum payment

The amount you must pay each month to keep your account in order

Interest-free period

The time between when you buy something on the card and the date when you must pay your monthly bill. This can be 50 days or more and is interest-free. So if you settle your bill in full every month, it's free borrowing.

Promotional Rate

A rate that is applied to your account until a given expiry date. Thereafter it will revert to the rate applicable to your account at that time.
